About This Piece
A few years ago, I visited Disneyland during the Halloween season and caught a glimpse of the Headless Horseman riding through the parade. Though the moment was brief, the midnight-black stallion and its eerie rider left a lasting impression on me, instantly transporting me back to watching Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow as a boy. There was a thrill in that kind of fear—the kind that feels real in the moment, yet safe. I think that’s part of the enduring appeal of Disney villains: they can be wicked, mischievous, and even frightening, but always within a world where we know we’re safe to enjoy the ride.
On the flight home, the idea for Villains Promenade began to take shape. I imagined what it would look like if these iconic characters took over Main Street at midnight, reveling in the spotlight. The Disney Parks team creates such incredible atmosphere during the holidays that it wasn’t hard to envision the scene illuminated with dramatic, almost theatrical lighting. The greatest challenge became deciding which villains to include—there are so many unforgettable personalities to choose from. These are some of my personal favorites, though there are certainly more waiting in the wings. Perhaps they’ll make an appearance in the next Villains Promenade.
